When I wake up, it takes me a minute to realize I’m not dreaming. There’s a thick, tattooed arm around my waist, and a giant Viking cuddling me. It’s the same as—and so, so different from—six years ago. For one, he’s still wearing sweatpants, and I’m wearing one of his T-shirts over my underwear. His hips aren’t pressed against me, but he’s still a furnace against my spine, his breath stirring the hair on the top of my head.

I feel… safe.

I never, ever want to get up.

But the longer I lie in his arms, the more my brain turns on and the more scared I become. Not physically. Worse. Because as much as I denied it last night, the new day mocks me with the clarity of my thoughts. The waves have settled and the sun blazes down like truth serum, shining on all the wreckage floating on the surface of the water.

This isn’t casual—for either of us. But whereas Matt seems ready to go all in, to explore the bond between us like a reasonably sane, emotionally mature adult…

I’m not.

And it’s not that I don’t want to. I want to so badly that tears spring to my eyes even thinking about it. But the darkness inside me doesn’t care about what my heart wants.

That darkness—I’ve learned all it wants is to protect me from pain. It’s the remains of myself at twenty: the sheltered girl who was swept off her feet by a charming smile and flashing eyes and all the trappings of wealth.

I hate her. Pity her. Sometimes, I mourn her. But I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive her.

Matt mumbles but stays asleep as I slip from the bed and find my dress, socks, and shoes. I take everything and go downstairs, dressing swiftly in the hallway bathroom.

Then I call an Uber and do exactly what he said I’d do.

I run.
